Massimo Carozza wins 2013 TELUS Cup award for 'Most Sportsmanlike Player'

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The 2013 TELUS Cup, Canada’s 40th National Midget Championship, held its awards banquet on Friday night at the Marconi Club. The tournament’s awards committee named the recipients of the seven individual awards.

The awards were based on the tournament’s preliminary round, which ran from Monday to Friday.

The 2013 TELUS Cup award winners are:
TELUS Most Valuable Player – Matthew Hudson (Ottawa Jr. 67’s)
Top Goaltender – Simon Hofley (Ottawa Jr. 67’s)
Top Forward – Kolten Olynek (Saskatoon Contacts)
Top Defensive Player – Gabe Bast (Red Deer Chiefs)
Most Sportsmanlike Player – Massimo Carozza (Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal)
Top Scorer – Massimo Carozza (Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal)
Esso Scholarship – Joshua Bergen (Saskatoon Contacts)
After an exciting week of preliminary round play, the semifinals are set for Saturday, April 27.
The second-place Red Deer Chiefs (2-1-2) meet the third-place Saskatoon Contacts (2-1-2) in the early semifinal (2 p.m. ET) on Saturday, the second year in a row the teams will meet in a playoff game, while the Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal, who took first place with a 4-1 record, will face the Ottawa Jr. 67’s (2-2-1), who finished fourth, in the late semifinal (6 p.m. ET).
The gold medal game will be held April 28 at 3 p.m. ET/noon PT and will be shown on TSN/RDS, Hockey Canada’s official broadcasters (check your local listings). Both semifinals and the bronze medal game can be seen live via webcast through FASTHockey at hockeycanada.fasthockey.com. Fans can watch all the action for free by following three steps:

A number of future NHLers have taken part in the National Midget Championship since its inception in 1974, including 53 first-round draft picks, three No. 1 selections (Gord Kluzak, Wendel Clark and Sidney Crosby) and nine future Hockey Hall of Fame inductees (Glenn Anderson, Ron Francis, Mike Gartner, Al MacInnis, Larry Murphy, Patrick Roy, Joe Sakic, Denis Savard and Steve Yzerman).

Connelly, Turner and Vallee named to NCHA All-Academic team

The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association named its All-Academic team this week and three Adrian players were named to the 64-member team.

Senior forward Sarah Connelly and juniors Lauren Turner and Alix Vallee were all recognized by the NCHA for their academic excellence.

Connelly, made the team for the second time in her career. She finished third on the team in goals (13) and fifth in points (21) this season. The Commerce, Mich. native is majoring in Health Studies.

Both Turner (Thunder Bay, Ont.) and Vallee (Belleville, Ont.) were blueliners for the Bulldogs.
Turner, an Exercise Science major, finished tied for third in assists with 16, and tied for seventh in points with 18.

Vallee, an Economics major, led the team in assists (20), and finished tied for third in points with 26.

***Note: Lauren's dad assures us that she is still playing as a forward!!

Girls Gold have two victories

Alums meet up in hockey game

 

One of our OHA parents (thanks Mr. Turner!) sent in this great photo of three of our recent graduates: Kaitlyn Ryan, Sheridan Friesen, and Lauren Turner. They met up for a game in Duluth where Adrian played St. Scholastica.  Adrian won 4-2 and 8-4 and gained sole possession of first place in the conference.  Not only that, but Adrian cracked the top ten and was ranked at #9 nationally.

Another kind of OHA team

Hockey teams aren't the only kind of team we have here at OHA. Here is Mr. Mike Lauzon, grade 12 math teacher, with some of his "mathletes". Let's go math Mavericks!

Hockey Night in Cornwall

Despite the hockey lockout, OHA students still got a taste of NHL action!

A group of NHL players were in Cornwall Ontario on Monday night for a charity hockey game to benefit the Cornwall Chapter of the Max Keeping Foundation and First Assist, a charity that funds programs to benefit First Nations youth in fly-in communities.

In the photo above is former Montreal Canadiens forward and Ontario Hockey Academy Coach Yves Sarault. He was the assistant coach for the white team in last night's charity game. On the bench sitting in front of him are Ottawa Senator's captain Daniel Alfredsson, Habs Travis Moen, and Sens enforcer Chris Neil.

Also playing the game were Chris Philips, Zach Smith, Guillaume Latendresse, Jesse Winchester, Brian Gionta, Josh Gorges, Derick Brassard, Tyler Kennedy, and many others. It was a full house at the Civic Complex as over 4800 people were in attendance Monday evening including many OHA students!

OHA has gone to the dogs

The kids love when friends and family come to cheer them on at their games. Most of the time, the friends and family are humans. But, the OHA Prep Team now has a non-human fan.

Meet Mollie Bee Blassic!

According to her mom, Mollie Bee has adopted the OHA Prep Team as her Number One team and cheers for the team in person whenever she gets the chance!

"Woof!", says Mollie Bee. This surely means "Go Mavericks!"

OHA to Trick Or Treat for the Agape

Hockey players wearing the colours maroon, gold, and white will be knocking door to door canvasing several neighbourhoods on Wednesday October 31st. However they will not be wearing costumes, instead they will be clad in their hockey jersey's, and they won't be asking for candy, instead they will be asking for non perishable food items. Students from the Ontario Hockey Academy, including Catherine Tufts and Brooklyn Kallusky pictured above, will be collecting food for the Agape Food Bank this Halloween. Teams will be visiting several different neighbourhoods including Riverdale, Center town, around Home Depot, Sunrise Acres, and around Vincent Massey.

"The Agape Center plays such an important role in providing support in the Cornwall community. We are truly happy that we can play a role in ensuring the center is able to continue to meet our city’s needs", says Principal Josh Harrison. Student Athletes engaged in this food collecting activity will have the opportunity to volunteer and learn more about civic responsibility. The Agape Centre relies 100% on the donations of time, food, money, clothing, and other household items from the community to help families that access the services. The Ontario Hockey Academy is pleased to go door to door this Halloween to collect food for such an important charity in our community.

OHA helps out Pond Inlet residents

Pond Inlet residents have an extra reason to be excited about the upcoming hockey season in their community. A surplus City of Cornwall Zamboni recently arrived in the northern community of 1,600 via ship. Tucked inside the hood of the Zamboni were some surplus hockey bags and various pieces of equipment from the Ontario Hockey Academy, as well as some T-shirts from Team Cornwall. Alcalde and Lovell are now Mooseheads

It's fun to keep up with news about former OHA Mavericks. These two fellows, Liam Alcalde and Brian Lovell, are now Mooseheads.

This is the text from the article about Liam's first goal with the team:

"Liam Alcalde won't soon forget his first goal in a Mooseheads uniform.

The 17yr old rookie scored on a penalty shot with under 3 minutes to play to give the Mooseheads a 3-2 in Sydney Sunday.  The Herd opened the scoring with Mike Molloy burying his first of the pre-season with assists going to Brian Lovell and Alexander Scully.  Cape Breton would jump out to a 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period despite the Moose holding a 20-13 shot advantage after 40 minutes.  Ontario free agent defenceman Randy Gazolla tied the game a 2 in the third before Alcalde scored the winner on the shorthanded penalty shot.  Jason Ellis picked up the win stopping all 8 shots he faced in the 2nd half of the game. Marc-Olivier Daigle stopped 10 of 12 through the first half of the contest.  The Herd outshot the Eagles 28-20.

The Mooseheads veterans will report to camp Monday.  The next home preseason game for the Moose is next Saturday, August 25th when the Herd travel to Acadia Alumni Arena in Wolfville to renew their rivalry with the Moncton Wildcats at 7pm.  Tickets are available at the Acadia Alumni Arena Box Office."

Welcome to the fall 2012 season: kids from near and far

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Fall 2012/13 year at OHA. We are so happy to have all of the new and returning students here with us. This year, we have lots of students with us from outside Canada. Russia, Ukraine, Norway, Argentina, England... It is very exciting to be around all of these interesting people. I wanted to start this year's blog by sharing a story from the "home town paper" for a couple new players, Robin Schütz und Niklas Lahme, from Germany. They are very proud to have these boys here and we are happy to have them:
